2008-2009 School Budget

Central Parents
The School Board’s proposed budget for 2008-2009 is now in front of the County Council and County Executive John Leopold. I plan to speak again on the budget when they have their hearings, but it would be good if you could send off an email to your county councilman and CE Leopold to tell them how desperately our school needs funding.

Here are the links to the addresses of the county council (ours is Ed Reilly) and the county executive, and also the 2008-2009 Budget Highlights.

Use your own words and it doesn’t need to be long (I think they kind of prefer the short and personal anyway).

Some talking points: In educational research, studies have shown that three things make the difference in schools. They are 1) small class size; 2) adequate funding; and 3) parent involvement. We are doing our part by having such a strong volunteer army at Central Elementary School. With state budget cuts we can’t be expected to go to the state for the funding we need to keep our school on the trajectory of success that it has enjoyed over the last 6 years. We desperately need a Gifted and Talented teacher FULL TIME and additional support for our Guidance Officer. An addition or renovation of our outdated open space architecture would sure be nice and some playground equipment wouldn’t be bad either. In addition, technology upgrades and additional parking would be appreciated!

You can phone in lieu of email or letter.

Thanks parents and I’ll let you know when the budget hearings are — if we could show up in force like we did at the school board, it makes a difference!

Mitchelle
